Two Year M.Sc. Degree in Data Science

Madras School of Economics offers the two-year (4 semester) M.Sc. degree in Data Science, Awarded by the Madras School of Economics under its degree granting power as per MSE Act 2020.

This program meets the current need to train students in techniques related to analyzing large amounts of data being generated at a rapid pace. The skills and tools that will be learnt in this course will be valuable in pursuing interdisciplinary work. The course will be attractive to people from various disciplines including Economics, Finance, Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Medicine etc., who want to learn analytical techniques to formulate problems and gain valuable insights from data.

The M.Sc. degree in Data Science, will offer several cutting edge subjects from Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Cyber Security etc., and will equip students with both practical and theoretical knowledge to make sense of large amounts of heterogeneous data in a multi computer environment. This will prepare students for pursuing higher studies, research or work in reputed companies both in India and abroad.

The M.Sc. Data Science program is built on strong theoretical foundations, integrating mathematics, statistics, computer science, logic, and medical analytics to prepare students for both academic and industry challenges.

MSE courses are recognized as advanced courses by academic circles and the market. Campus recruitment takes place in the 3rd semester by various leading businesses and other institutions. Our students have been recruited by leading organizations like HSBC, Nathan Associates, IFMR, Citigroup Global Services (CGSL), Hewlett Packard, Symphony, Mu Sigma, Infosys BPO and Genpact.

Eligibility

a) Undergraduate degree in social sciences (including commerce & management), sciences, or
Mathematics, Statistics and Engineering (including those who are appearing for their final year exams in the AY 2025).
b) Valid GATE score of Computer Science & Information Technology (CS), Data Science & Artificial Intelligence (DA), Mathematics (MA), Statistics (ST), Physics (PH).
c) The eligible candidates must secure at the under-graduation level: 55% for General category;
50% for OBC – Non-Creamy Layer; 45% for SC/ST/PWD candidates.
d) The eligible candidates should not have completed 25 years of age as on 1 st July 2025.
e) The candidates should have studied mathematics at plus-two level, or its equivalent
or completion of mathematical economics course(s) at under-graduate level.

Number of Seats

The intake under M.Sc. in Data Science Program will be 47, including 35% quota for the resident students of Tamil Nadu.

Application and Basis of Selection

Admission will be based on entrance test at designated centres in India, subject to fulfillment of eligibility criteria. In case of tie in entrance test marks, merit ranking will be based on percentage of marks obtained in the qualifying examination, and age.

Students applying through GATE Scores will be allotted maximum 50% seats without entrance test and the balance seats will be through All India Entrance Test. In both cases the reservation policy will be followed
